About St. Thomas Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church

St Thomas Jacobite church, Portsmouth is one of the parishes of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Church's (MSOC) Patriarchal vicariate in the UK. It was officially declared as a parish church of the MSOC on 25th January 2004 by H G Dr. Kuriakose Mor Theophilose Metropolitan, who was the patriarchal vicar for the region then. Since then this parish has become the focal point of Syrian Orthodox Christian community in south coast of England. It has got 30 families as the registered parish members and around another 15 families who actively participate in the Liturgy and other activities of this parish. Rev.Fr Eldhose Koungumpillil was the first Vicar of this parish. This parish extends its border with two counties of both West Sussex and Hamphshire. The Hoy Qurbono ( Holy Mass) is celebrated on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month at St.Nicholas Church Hall, Brook Lane, Bosham. PO18 8JZ.

H G Dr. Gheevarghese Mor Koorilose Metropolitan became the Patriarchal vicar of MSOC UK in May 2009 and Rev. Fr. Gheevarghese Thandayth was appointed the vicar of the parish in October 2009. With them a new era of safeguarding the true Antiochian faith and discipline of the Church has emerged in this parish. The parish and its members could be proud that they stood firm under the real hierarchical discipline and faith of the church, not giving up even at the cost of risking personal relationships. Thereby it became an example of true obedience to the authorities of the church and their words. We remember with thanks the guidance and immense support of HG Mor Koorilose and our vicar Fr.Thandayth extended to our efforts in this regard. H G. Mathew Mor Ephrem Metropolitan followed H G Mor Koorilose as the Patriarchal vicar in May 2011 and spiritually nourished us further. From 2014 to 2017 H.G. Zacharias Mor Phelexinos was the Patriarcahl Vicar. Since 2017 H.G. Dr. Mathews Mor Anthemose Metropolitan is the Patriarchal Vicar and our church is thankful to H.G. for all his support, guidance and caring in both spiritual and all the administrative matters.

After five years meritorious service of unflinching loyalty to the Holy Anthiochian throne, the liturgical traditions of our church and its disciplines, Fr. Thandayth was relieved of the responsibilities of the parish from 01 January 2014, in order to take responsibilities in other parishes of the UK Patriarchal Vicariate. Then Fr. Dr. Biji Chirathilattu Markose served as vicar vicar from January 2014 till 2017. Then Fr.Phillip Thomas served as Vicar from 2017 to 2018. Since 2018 the present vicar Rev.Fr. Peter Kuriakose took charge and under his leadership the parish hosted the 2019 all UK MSOC family conference

The Holy Qurbono is being assisted by a number of Altar boys and men belonging to different age groups. A beautiful choir led by Mr Madhu Mamman and Mrs Mini James endows the liturgical services with heavenly tunes and music. A Sunday School is being run by Jose Mundanad(Headmaster)and many dedicated teachers. The youth from this parish are active members of the Malankara Syrian Orthodox Youth movement and participate regularly in all activities of the Church.
